The Grove

Every Cloud Forest book, read online, for one membership.

The Grove is our library on the web. A member signs in from a phone, a tablet, or a computer and opens any book we publish. There is nothing to download and nothing to install. The Grove keeps your place in each book and everything you mark in it, and carries both to whatever screen you pick up next. On a phone you can add it to your home screen and it opens like an app.

What is on the shelf

Twenty-nine titles today. New Cloud Forest releases go on the shelf as they are published, so the membership grows without another purchase.

  • Practice. Internal Martial Science, The Alchemist's Body, Forging the Immortal Body, Quiet Warriors, Quiet Guardians, Between the Cross and the Way.
  • Faith and philosophy. How to Pray and Worship, Architecture of the Unseen, Inhabiting the Unseen, Exploring the Unseen, When Bowing Is Not Worship, Was Solomon Real, The Empath Delusion.
  • Fiction. The Herald, The Herald Reborn, The Hearth and the Fire, The Jade Dragon.
  • Horror. Casey Martin's Shattered Universe.
  • Kids. The New Girl.
  • Warden Grimoires. Ten adult grimoires by Shaman J. Cross on their own shelf, behind an eighteen-and-older gate. They never sit next to the kids' books.

The first chapter of every book is open to anyone, member or not. Read it before you decide.

How members use it

  1. Read in a reader built for long sittings. Four color settings (paper, amber, forest, night), serif or sans type, your own text size and line spacing, scrolling or page turns, and a focus mode that hides everything but the words.
  2. Pick up where you stopped. Close a book on your phone at the bus stop and open it on the laptop that night. Same chapter, same line.
  3. Mark what matters. Select a passage, pick one of four colors, add a note if you want one. Every highlight and note from every book collects on one Notes page, searchable, and exports as a Markdown file you keep.
  4. Search inside a book. Find the passage about the hip turn, or the line about the coal that will not go out, and jump straight to it.
  5. Listen. Twelve titles carry a Listen button that reads the chapter aloud in your device's own voice, with speed control, chapter skipping, and a sleep timer. A small player stays with you while you browse the shelf.
  6. Watch the reading add up. Your library page shows what you are reading, your streak, the minutes you read this week, and a yearly goal with a ring that fills as you finish books. The Stats page keeps a year of days, time by shelf, the hours you tend to read, and a set of quiet badges.
  7. Follow a press shelf. Start here is the shelf we hand new members. Series are kept in reading order.
  8. Ask the press. Want a title we have not written yet, or a back-list book that is not on the shelf? Send a request. The desk answers, and when the book lands it is linked in your request.

Where it fits in a day

A training manual open on the mat at six in the morning, text turned up large enough to read from standing. A prayer book on your phone in a waiting room. A chapter of The Herald read aloud on the drive home. Notes from Internal Martial Science kept beside notes from Quiet Warriors, so the two books start answering each other.

Why we built it

A bookstore sells one book at a time and never hears what happened after. The Grove is a shelf we tend ourselves. New titles go up when they are finished, readers tell us what they want next, and most of each membership stays with the press in Greensboro.

What it costs

$19.99 a month, or $224.88 a year, which is twelve months with fifteen dollars taken off. Billing runs through Stripe. Cancel from your account page whenever you like; your access runs to the end of the period you already paid for. Sales tax is added at checkout where it applies.

Founding passes from the press still redeem on the join page. If you were given one, sign in there and enter it.

Print editions and merchandise stay here in the bookstore. The Grove is for reading and listening online.
